Top 10 Healthiest Slash couples

A while back, I searched the internet for fan-fiction. I know, I know. But FanFic has a bad reputation. Sure, a large proportion of it is riddle with so many spelling and grammar mistake it would make an English teacher cry, but there are a lot of well-written stories available.

Even better, most fanfics are of slash nature. For those not dorky enough, slash is when a writer has two characters, usually of the same sex, in a relationship that does not occur in canon. It’s written by using the backslash (hence the name) like House/Wilson.
After trolling the mighty internet, I’ve come up with the Top 10 Healthiest Slash couples.

(Also, I don’t own any of the photos, I Googled. If the owner wishes, I will gladly take them down.)

Let me establish the perimeters. First, the couple must be functional and healthy for both members. Couples like Batman/Joker are not allowed because they are not stable. Second, the couple must have never been an actually couple in canon. Sexual tension and maybes/what ifs are ok, as long as nothing ever developed. Third, there are a lot of slashes out there. So of course, certain couples are not included in this list. If I missed one that you feel has merit leave a comment!
Now, the list:

10. Caramel and Big Mac, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

I’ve already talked about these two. It’s a classic love story of the unpopular, ditzy person to have a crush on the hottie way out of their league. Only to have it turn out that the hottie has a crush on them too. This time, it’s ponies and I’m simply do not care. These two make me giggle like the school girl I am.

Read fan fic

9. Princess Bubblegum and Marceline, Adventure Time

While the gender swapped episode spawned Prince Gumball/Marshal Lee fics, the original couple is more valid. Throughout the series, Marceline and Princess Bubblegum share secret looks and have the rockiest friendship ever. Marceline just wants Bubblegum to love her; Bubblegum must pretend that she doesn’t love a vampire. But, in the “City of Thieves” episode, we learn that Bubblegum wears the T-shirt that Marceline gave her.

There’s no doubt that these two will have to work hard for their relationship, but in the end, they each provide a counterpoint that balances each other out.

Read and understand how different these two are, and how that makes them a perfect match.

8. Katara and Prince Zuko, Avatar: The Last Airbender

The fire-bending prince and a water-bending water villager. Can anyone say opposites attract? During the course of the show, these two had some many maybes and sexual tension that everyone wanted Zuko to get-it-together and woo Katara. Equally matched in power, these two benders would have a dynamic relationship coveted by everyone.

Read and laugh

7. Frodo and Sam, Lord of the Rings

After everything these two survived, their relationship would be unbreakable. They literally carried each other to the ends of Middle Earth and back. Need I say more?

Read this You know you want to.

6. Harry and Luna, Harry Potter

Harry may have ended up with Ginny, but Luna would have made a better match. He understood her craziness better than anyone else, and she would have let him have all the attention he could ever want. After book 5, how can anyone not think these two are a perfect pair?

You know the drill

5. Raven and Best Boy, Teen Titans

He annoys the crap out of her, she doesn’t laugh at his jokes. These two are so in love it’s sickening. In “Beast Within”, Raven is the only one to understand what’s happening to Beast Boy. And of course, when Terra attacks, Raven only loses control when Beast Boy is mentioned. Like many of the couples mentioned, they provide a balance to each other.

A little sad, but it explains why these two are made for each other.

4. Mercutio and Tybalt, Romeo and Juliet

The oldest slash couple on this list. And while both end up dying because of their love, it’s only because Romeo wants to bang a fifteen year old. Reread “Romeo and Juliet” with this couple in mind; the story makes more sense now, doesn’t it? It explains why Mercutio doesn’t want Romeo and Tybalt to fight, why Mercutio freaks out when Tybalt accuses him of having sex with Romeo. Seriously, these two had the perfect relationship until Romeo couldn’t keep it in his pants.

What could have been

3. Hanners and Marigold, Questionable Content

While Jeph Jacques (the creator of QC) has stated that a Hannelore/Marigold relationship will never happen, that hasn’t stopped the fanboys and girls from shipping them. While the fan art and fan fic is scarce for these two, the characters are perfect for each other. Hannelore would prevent Marigold from becoming a social outcast and Marigold would help Hanners overcome her OCD issues. It wouldn’t be the epic fairy tale love that everyone inspires for, but for these two, it would be bliss.

2. Kirk and Spock, Star Trek

One of the oldest and most famous slashes in the fandom universe. The Captain and the Doctor of the Enterprise are so famous that people who have never seen Star Trek (like me) know this slash. In fact, their popularity is what made me place them so high. In deep space, everyone wants that special someone, and Kirk and Spock are a good match. If I understand my Star Trek lore correctly, not even death can separate them.

There are endless AMVs, pictures and videos for these guys.

1. Abe Sapien and Kroenen, Hellboy

These two never share screen time and yet there’s a whole community devoted to them. Now that’s a fan-made slash! Like many of the couples on this list, these two are opposite sides of the battle. Still, their love overcomes the differences and fills the fans with glee enough to reduce us to smiling idiots.

Honorary mentions
Link and Midna, Legend of Zelda – Twilight Princess
Robin and Kid Flash, Young Justice

Love Always,
Joe

  1. While I love this list - I'm always so happy to find more lunarry shippers! We're growing in numbers! - I gotta point out that generally 'slash' refers to male/male or female/female couples. If you were to replace your het choices with other slash choices, who would you choose?

    1. oh this list. hahaha

I think if I was going to replace the het couples I would include Stiles and Derek from "Teen Wolf." They would probably be at spot 6, because while the show doesn't have that big of a following this pairing is huge in that Fandom.

I also think I would add Sherlock and John Watson, but I would be hesitate to have because there's soooo many versions of the couple that picking one would be hard. I'd have to lump it as one and that would make them be low on the list.

I had fun thinking this list over again. Thank you for the comment!
